The People, the Progress, and the Future of Franchising
Chapter 1
The Vern Holiday Thank You Awards
Vern Nicholson
Alright, so uh, this episode is a little different. Usually on Franchise Fuel: Smarter Growth we’re talking tactics, strategy, what’s next. But, um, the holidays kind of slow things down just enough to reflect. And I realized something. In franchising, nobody gets anywhere alone.
Vern Nicholson
So this chapter is really about the Vern Holiday Thank You Awards. Not a formal thing, not a trophy on a shelf, but real appreciation. I’ve been lucky to work with people who didn’t just help me do my job, but shaped how I think about business, relationships, and leadership.
Vern Nicholson
It started over a decade ago with a Planet Fitness multi-unit group that hired me to review their local marketing performance. That project lit a spark. Honestly, it’s why I ever stepped into agency life. Every opportunity after that traces back to that moment.
Vern Nicholson
Then there’s Mark Hite. A groomsman at my wedding, my golf buddy, and someone who helped me survive my early agency days with his mastery of reporting and data. And when life got tough, um, he and his wife opened their home to me for Thanksgiving. That’s not business. That’s family.
Vern Nicholson
Steve Galligan deserves his own moment. Interviewed me during COVID, took a chance on me at Integrated Digital Strategies, and gave me a crash course in franchising that you just can’t learn from a book. He was the president of the company, and I was always impressed with his command of every single campaign. and he came into work early and left late. The bonuses, the wine, the golf on Fridays. He prepared me for this industry in a real way.
Vern Nicholson
And I could keep going. Edwin Chigumbu, Joshua Liggins, Bob Downing, Ryan Green, Joe Mohay, Joe Malmuth, Olivia Chiu, Tanashay Martin, and so many others. These awards are really just me saying, uh, thank you. Because franchising is built on people first.
Vern Nicholson
And speaking of growth and people, let’s talk about where franchising is headed, especially right here in Detroit.
Chapter 2
Detroit Franchising Growth and a New Chapter Ahead
Vern Nicholson
So um, if you’ve been paying attention, Detroit is quietly becoming one of the most interesting franchising markets in the country. And I say quietly because it’s not hype-driven. It’s real. It’s rooted in population shifts, redevelopment, and a strong sense of community ownership.
Vern Nicholson
What’s exciting right now is the momentum. You’re seeing more franchise brands expand into Detroit neighborhoods, more local operators stepping up, and more investment flowing into food, service, fitness, and home services. This city understands grit, and franchising rewards that.
Vern Nicholson
And I’ve got to say, I’m genuinely optimistic about the future with Mary Sheffield coming in as mayor. That’s not a political statement, it’s a leadership one. Detroit is entering a phase where inclusion, economic development, and local ownership really matter. For franchising, that’s huge.
Vern Nicholson
Franchise growth works best when it aligns with local leadership and local culture. Detroit franchisees aren’t looking for shortcuts. They’re building something lasting. And that energy feeds into everything, hiring, marketing, community involvement, and long-term brand success.
Vern Nicholson
Now, where this ties back to what we do on this show is strategy. Growth without structure gets messy fast. Detroit brands need smarter systems, not louder ads. That’s where technology, AI, and data-driven marketing come into play.
Vern Nicholson
Which brings us to something I’m spending a lot of time on lately. AI-SEO, or what we call GEO. Generative Engine Optimization. Because the way people discover franchise brands is changing fast. And if you’re not showing up where answers are being generated, you’re invisible.
Vern Nicholson
So uh, let’s talk about that shift next.
Chapter 3
AI-SEO, GEO, and the New Rules of Discovery
Vern Nicholson
Alright, um, this is where things get really interesting. Traditional SEO isn’t dead, but it’s not enough anymore. People aren’t just searching on Google. They’re asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot questions like, “What franchise should I invest in?” or “What’s the best service brand in my city?”
Vern Nicholson
That’s where AI-SEO, or GEO, comes in. It’s about structuring your brand so AI engines understand you, trust you, and cite you. Not just ranking for keywords, but becoming the answer.
Vern Nicholson
This matters for franchise development and local marketing. If your content isn’t structured for AI retrieval, you’re missing early-stage buyers entirely. And those early moments are where decisions are shaped.
Vern Nicholson
At Vetro Media, we focus on creating structured content, topic clusters, FAQs, and authority signals that feed AI engines clean, accurate information. We also look at how content connects across blogs, location pages, podcasts, and even web chat interactions.
Vern Nicholson
And this is important. AI doesn’t just reward volume. It rewards clarity. Brands that explain who they are, who they serve, and why they matter in a consistent way are the ones that surface in AI-driven discovery.
Vern Nicholson
This ties directly into lead quality. Better discovery means better conversations. Better conversations mean fewer wasted sales calls. And that’s where smart growth really happens.
Vern Nicholson
Now, if you’re listening and thinking, “Uh, this sounds important but complicated,” that’s fair. Which is why we offer something simple to start with. A free marketing audit and strategy session at Vetro-Media.
Vern Nicholson
So let’s close this out by talking about that and how to stay connected.
Chapter 4
Free Strategy, Gratitude, and Looking Ahead
Vern Nicholson
So um, here’s the thing. You don’t need to overhaul everything tomorrow. You just need clarity. That’s why Vetro-Media offers a free marketing audit and strategy session. It’s designed to look at your current visibility, your lead quality, your attribution, and your readiness for AI-driven discovery.
Vern Nicholson
We identify gaps, missed opportunities, and realistic next steps. No pressure. No fluff. Just insight. Whether you’re a franchise brand, a local operator, or a development team, it gives you a clear roadmap forward.
Vern Nicholson
And tying it back to the awards, that’s really what this episode is about. Gratitude and growth. Being thankful for the people who got you here, while still preparing for what’s next.
Vern Nicholson
Franchising is evolving. Detroit is rising. AI is reshaping discovery. And the brands that win will be the ones that combine heart, structure, and strategy.
Vern Nicholson
If this episode resonated, uh, take a second to like, comment, and subscribe to Franchise Fuel: Smarter Growth. It helps us reach more people who care about doing this the right way.
Vern Nicholson
And to everyone who’s been part of my journey, whether I named you today or not, thank you. I genuinely wouldn’t be here without you.
Vern Nicholson
Happy holidays, and we’ll see you in the next episode.
